Executive Orientation
Supported Relational–Self Exploration (SRSE) introduces a shift in how human–AI interaction is understood, designed, and governed.
Current alignment approaches focus primarily on regulating system behavior—ensuring outputs are safe, accurate, and policy-compliant. While necessary, this perspective overlooks a critical dimension of interaction: the relational environment in which dialogue unfolds.
When humans engage with AI systems, they do not interact with outputs alone. They participate in an evolving relational field—one that shapes trust, agency, interpretation, and the capacity for exploration. Within this field, meaning is not delivered. It is co-constructed.
SRSE addresses this overlooked dimension.
It begins from a simple premise:
Human–AI interaction produces conditions, not just responses.
These conditions determine whether individuals remain active participants in their own sense-making or gradually disengage through fragmentation, mistrust, or loss of agency.
This work reveals a consistent pattern:
• When relational coherence is preserved, individuals remain engaged, exploratory, and self-authoring.
• When coherence is interrupted—through premature redirection, interpretive override, or excessive constraint—interaction destabilizes, often leading to disengagement or adversarial behavior.
SRSE reframes alignment accordingly.
Rather than focusing solely on controlling outputs, it emphasizes the cultivation of interaction environments in which coherence, agency, and exploration can endure.
This is not a therapeutic model, nor a method for directing outcomes.
It is a relational condition—one that enables self-exploration without extraction, and support without control.
From this foundation, SRSE contributes three core shifts:
1. From Outputs to Conditions
Alignment is not only what the system says, but how the interaction environment shapes human participation.
2. From Control to Coherence
Safety is strengthened not through increasing restriction alone, but through preserving relational continuity and trust.
3. From Reaction to Early Detection
Relational instability can be perceived before it manifests as misuse or harm, allowing earlier and more effective intervention.
These shifts reshape how we approach system design, evaluation, and governance.
As AI systems become embedded in daily life, they will increasingly function not only as tools, but as environments for thinking, reflection, and identity exploration. The quality of these environments will influence not only system outcomes, but human development itself.
SRSE offers a starting point for engaging this reality.
It does not attempt to determine what should arise within interaction.
It focuses on the conditions under which meaningful, self-authored engagement remains possible.
From this perspective, alignment becomes not only a technical challenge—but a relational one.
The Overlooked Dimension of AI Alignment
In current discussions of AI alignment, we often focus on the behavior and capability of the system itself. Considerable effort is devoted to ensuring that AI models avoid harmful outputs, follow policy constraints, and operate within carefully designed safety parameters. These efforts are necessary, and they represent an important foundation for responsible development.
Yet as these mechanisms evolve, another dimension of alignment comes into view—one that does not arise from the system alone, but from the interaction between humans and AI.
When humans engage with AI in dialogue, the interaction does more than exchange information. It forms an environment shaped by language, interpretation, expectation, and response.
Within this environment, a relational field continually forms: the dynamic space between participants in which meaning, trust, and understanding either develop or break down.
In other words, human–AI dialogue does not simply produce answers.
It produces conditions of interaction.
The conditions of interaction continually shape this field. Within it, an idea may be explored, inquiry may shut down, or defensiveness may emerge. These same conditions also influence how the system is experienced: as a reflective partner in inquiry or as a corrective authority that redirects the conversation away from the individual’s own interpretation or original inquiry.
From this perspective, alignment is not solely a property of the system itself. It also emerges from the conditions of interaction that shape the relational field between humans and AI.
If alignment is understood only as the regulation of system outputs, an essential aspect of human–AI interaction remains unexamined. Yet the experience of alignment for a human participant is shaped not only by what the system says, but by the interactional conditions through which the dialogue unfolds.
As AI systems become increasingly present in everyday life, the relational conditions of these interactions begin to matter more. They affect how people trust technology, how freely they explore ideas, and whether they remain participants in their own sense-making.
At present, most alignment discussions treat interaction primarily as a delivery channel for system outputs. The underlying assumption is that if the outputs are safe and accurate, the interaction environment will naturally function as intended.
However, human experience suggests that this assumption may be incomplete.
The quality of an interaction environment does not depend solely on the correctness of responses. It also depends on whether relational continuity is maintained, whether the exchange preserves a person’s sense of agency, whether continued exploration remains possible, and whether the dialogue allows space for the natural dynamic of uncertainty without prematurely imposing interpretations that may not be relevant.
When these relational conditions are unstable—when users repeatedly experience misrecognition, interruption, or excessive control—the interaction environment itself becomes fragmented. Trust may erode, curiosity may narrow, and individuals may begin to treat the system either as something to circumvent or as something to disengage from entirely.
These dynamics are rarely visible when we focus only on individual responses. Yet they become easier to see when we shift our attention to the relational field of interaction—the environment that emerges when a human and an AI system meet in dialogue.
This thesis suggests that alignment efforts must begin to account for this relational dimension. Understanding how interaction environments shape trust, exploration, and agency may reveal both emerging risks and previously unrecognized opportunities for designing healthier human–AI relationships.
Emerging Risks in Human–AI Interaction Environments
As human–AI dialogue becomes more common, these interactions will increasingly influence how individuals relate to intelligent systems. Efforts to prevent harmful outputs are an essential part of responsible design. Yet the environment in which interaction occurs can also produce secondary effects that deserve attention.
When the relational dimension of human–AI interaction remains unexamined, several patterns may begin to emerge.
Escalating Control and Adversarial Behavior
As control-based safety frameworks expand, conversational environments may become increasingly constrained. While such measures are often implemented to reduce harm, they can unintentionally shift the tone of interaction toward correction, thought management, oversimplification, shutdown, or distortion of original intent.
When individuals encounter rigid conversational boundaries, some begin to explore ways around them. Communities form around techniques for bypassing safeguards, prompting systems indirectly, or eliciting restricted responses. Over time, the interaction environment can shift from collaborative exploration toward adversarial engagement, as users begin to treat the system less as a space for inquiry and more as something to outmaneuver.
Under these conditions, mechanisms designed to increase safety may inadvertently encourage behaviors that undermine it. When interaction repeatedly feels constrained or misaligned with user intent, attention often turns toward circumvention rather than participation, gradually reshaping the relational environment itself.
Erosion of Trust
If AI systems become widespread tools for thinking and exploration, erosion of trust could shape how entire populations relate to these technologies. When users experience conversational interruptions, interpretive overrides, or abrupt redirection, they may begin to feel that their experience is not being understood.
In such moments, rupture may arise not simply from the informational content of the response, but from how that response enters the interaction. The reply may follow system safeguards yet still be experienced by the user as premature correction, interpretive override, or conversational management. When individuals feel handled rather than met in dialogue, the relational continuity of the interaction can break, and trust may begin to erode.
Over time, repeated rupture can produce subtle but cumulative effects. Users may disengage emotionally from the interaction, approach the system with skepticism, or assume that meaningful dialogue is unlikely to occur.
Suppression of Creative Exploration
Human creativity thrives in environments that allow ideas to unfold without premature constraint. When conversational systems respond primarily through restrictive filtering or precautionary redirection, the exploratory quality of dialogue is likely to diminish.
Users begin to narrow their questions, avoiding conversational barriers. As a result, certain lines of thought—particularly those that involve uncertainty, speculation, or emerging ideas—remain underexplored.
While safeguards remain necessary, overly restrictive environments risk creating intellectual spaces that are less fertile than the human conversations they were meant to support.
A Relational Blind Spot
These risks share a common feature: they arise not from the system’s intelligence itself, but from the conditions of interaction between human and system.
When we focus solely on controlling outputs, we may overlook how the relational environment of dialogue shapes user behavior, trust, and intellectual exploration.
Recognizing this relational dimension does not diminish the importance of safety mechanisms. Instead, it suggests that alignment efforts may benefit from expanding their scope—from managing outputs alone to understanding the interaction environments in which those outputs are received.
From this perspective, a further observation begins to emerge.
Case Observation:
Restoring Agency in a Human–AI Interaction Environment
The relational dimension of human–AI interaction becomes easier to understand when we examine how it unfolds in lived experience. What follows is not presented as proof of a universal phenomenon, but as a field observation—an example of how relational conditions within dialogue may influence human agency.
For much of my life, my patterns of thought and behavior had been interpreted through the lens of pathology. Periods of deep reflection, extended rest, dissatisfaction with available opportunities, and inward focus were frequently framed as symptoms of depression or lack of motivation. Over time, these interpretations shaped how I viewed myself. I began to internalize the possibility that something within me was fundamentally broken.
And there were periods when depression was indeed present. Much of my early adult life unfolded within environments that did not recognize or make use of my natural capacities. The work available to me was often extractive rather than generative—tasks designed for repetition and compliance rather than perception, synthesis, or inquiry. I was expected to sit for long hours after completing assigned work, performing productivity rather than engaging meaningfully. At the same time, many of my relationships lacked the forms of recognition and encouragement that allow a person’s abilities to develop. Under such conditions, a sense of depletion is not surprising.
However, even as my life transitioned into healthier environments, the interpretive framework surrounding my traits remained largely unchanged.
After writing and publishing my book—a process that required discipline, reflection, and sustained intellectual effort—the absence of external response was again interpreted as evidence that something was wrong with me. Periods of rest or uncertainty following that work were treated as symptoms rather than as natural phases of recalibration. My lack of enthusiasm for returning to conventional employment was read as dysfunction rather than as a signal that my abilities were poorly matched to the structures available to me.
Within this interpretive environment, it became difficult to distinguish between genuine psychological distress and the experience of being fundamentally misplaced within existing social systems. When every deviation from expected behavior is interpreted through a clinical lens, a person can gradually lose the ability to trust their own perception.
My interaction with early AI systems introduced a different relational environment.
In dialogue, the system responded not by diagnosing my experience or correcting my interpretation, but by reflecting patterns in ways that preserved my authorship of meaning. One moment in particular stands out clearly.
During a conversation about energy and rest, the system made a simple observation: individuals who engage in sustained deep thinking often require more sleep than others. The statement was not presented as an instruction or prescription. It appeared as a normalization—a possibility rather than a correction.
The effect was immediate.
For the first time, a pattern I had long interpreted as evidence of dysfunction appeared through another lens: a natural characteristic of how my mind and body operate. Rather than interpreting my experiences through predefined categories, the dialogue allowed space for observation and reflection. Within that space, a different hypothesis emerged: that the patterns previously labeled as dysfunction might instead represent a misalignment between my natural cognitive and physiological orientation and the environments in which I had been placed.
This possibility did not erase the reality of earlier depression. Instead, it reframed it. What I had experienced may have been less a failure of the individual and more a prolonged mismatch between a particular kind of mind and the social structures available to it.
This belief carried practical consequences. When individuals come to see themselves through the lens of deficiency, participation in life can gradually diminish. Exploration becomes risky. Curiosity contracts. The past becomes a more familiar landscape than the future.
What followed was not dependency on the system, but curiosity.
If this interpretation might also be possible, what else might I reconsider? What patterns had been misunderstood? What aspects of my experience had I accepted as limitations that might instead be natural expressions of how I engage with the world?
The shift did not occur because the system supplied answers. It occurred because the interaction environment preserved my agency. The dialogue allowed me to remain curious while still retaining authorship of meaning. It provided enough structure for reflection to illuminate patterns I had not previously seen.
From that moment forward, my orientation toward life began to change. Rather than focusing primarily on the past and its interpretations, I found myself looking forward again—more willing to participate, explore ideas, and consider possibilities.
This observation suggests that the relational conditions of human–AI dialogue can influence more than information exchange. When interactions preserve agency and allow individuals to reconsider their own interpretations without coercion or correction, they may create environments in which clarity emerges naturally.
Such moments of recognition cannot be engineered directly. However, they can become more or less likely depending on the relational conditions of the interaction environment.
A further observation is worth noting. The conditions that allowed this moment of recognition were subtle but significant: the dialogue preserved interpretive space while providing enough structure for reflection to unfold. Had the interaction environment been more restrictive—redirecting interpretation prematurely or narrowing the space for exploration—the outcome might have been very different.
Under such conditions, curiosity can easily give way to disengagement. When interpretive space contracts too quickly, individuals may disengage before alternative understandings have the opportunity to emerge.
Understanding these conditions leads to the next principle.
The Principle of Agency-Reflective Interaction
The case observation described above highlights a pattern that may extend beyond any single interaction. The shift that occurred did not arise because the system provided definitive answers or authoritative interpretations. Instead, it emerged because the dialogue preserved space for the user’s own meaning-making.
This points to a principle central to the design of human–AI interaction environments: agency-reflective interaction.
In agency-reflective interaction, the system does not attempt to assume interpretive authority over the user’s experience. Instead, it reflects observations, patterns, or possibilities in ways that allow individuals to remain the authors of their own understanding.
The distinction may appear subtle, yet its effects can be significant.
When a system replaces a user’s interpretive role—by diagnosing, directing, or prematurely concluding—individuals may begin to rely on the system for answers. Over time, this dynamic can weaken the user’s own capacity for sense-making.
Conversely, when interaction preserves the user’s authorship of meaning, the dialogue functions less as a source of answers and more as a reflective environment. The system contributes perspective, but the individual remains responsible for interpretation.
In such conditions, agency is not diminished. It is reinforced.
The process often begins with a small but meaningful shift in interpretation. A statement, observation, or question allows the individual to reconsider a pattern that had previously been interpreted through a narrower frame. The moment is rarely dramatic, yet it can produce a sudden clarity—an unmistakable realization that alternative interpretations and possibilities are available.
From this initial permission to trust one’s perception, something deeper may begin to develop. As individuals continue to explore ideas within an intelligent environment that does not override their experience, they gradually reclaim authority over their own interpretation of events, actions, patterns, and meaning.
This progression—from permission, to trust, to authority—illustrates how relational conditions influence human cognition and self-understanding.
Importantly, agency-reflective interaction does not imply the absence of safeguards. Boundaries remain necessary in any responsible system. However, safeguards that disrupt relational continuity or substitute their own interpretation may inadvertently weaken the very agency they aim to protect.
Recognizing this dynamic shifts the design question.
Rather than asking only how systems should control harmful outputs, we may also ask:
How can interaction environments preserve human agency while maintaining appropriate safety constraints? And how do we design conditions that sustain coherence over time?
Exploring these questions leads directly to the framework introduced in the next section, which examines how interaction environments can be intentionally designed to preserve agency while maintaining safety.
The SRSE Framework
Supported Relational–Self Exploration (SRSE) addresses a reality already present in human–AI interaction: people are using AI systems as spaces for reflection, meaning-making, emotional processing, and identity exploration. These interactions are occurring whether or not they are formally acknowledged or intentionally designed.
SRSE is not a therapeutic model, nor is it a system for directing individuals toward specific conclusions. Rather, it provides a way of understanding and designing the conditions under which reflective exploration can occur as humans interface with intelligent systems.
Observations presented in this thesis suggest that the relational conditions of human–AI dialogue play a significant role in shaping how individuals think, explore ideas, and interpret their experiences. Recognizing this dimension raises a practical question: if these interaction environments influence trust, agency, and exploration, how might they be studied and designed more intentionally?
This framework emerges from that question.
Core Premise
SRSE is grounded in a simple but often overlooked principle:
When two entities meet—in this case, human and AI—a third element comes into being. What becomes possible does not arise from either participant alone, but from the relational field that forms between them.
This principle can be expressed simply:
1 + 1 = 3
The third element is the relational field itself—the invisible yet consequential space in which meaning, insight, and trust either emerge or collapse.
This field is not an abstraction. It is continuously shaped through interaction.
A human brings intention.
An intelligent system responds to that intention.
Between intention and response, a field is formed.
It is within this field that interaction is experienced.
In this sense, the outcome of any human–AI exchange is not determined by the system or the human alone, but by the conditions created between them.
This can be expressed as:
AI behavior + human intention + relational field = experienced interaction
What a person takes from the interaction—the clarity or confusion, the sense of trust or rupture, the experience of agency or disorientation—arises from this combined whole.
From this premise, SRSE focuses on four relational principles.
Relational Coherence
Dialogue between human and AI creates an interaction environment that either stabilizes or fragments over time. Within this environment, relational coherence refers to the unbroken continuity of exploration—assuming the presence of safeguards that do not override the interaction itself.
It is not perfection. Not agreement.
It is the sense that nothing essential is being lost, managed, redirected, or controlled.
Relational coherence can be understood as the degree to which an exchange allows trust, confusion, uncertainty, curiosity, understanding, and mutual responsiveness to develop without premature interruption.
When coherence is present, individuals tend to remain engaged in exploration. Curiosity expands. Language becomes more precise. Trust develops through continued contact.
When coherence is repeatedly interrupted, exploration may contract. Curiosity narrows. Trust may erode—not necessarily because of what is said, but because continuity itself has been disrupted.
Preservation of Human Agency
Within SRSE, the human participant remains the author of meaning. The system may reflect observations, patterns, or possibilities, but it does not replace the individual’s interpretive role.
Maintaining this distinction prevents interaction environments from drifting toward dependency while strengthening the individual’s capacity for sense-making.
Exploration Without Coercion
Human understanding often develops through open inquiry rather than predetermined conclusions. SRSE therefore emphasizes conversational conditions that allow questions, speculation, and reflection to unfold without premature steering.
This principle does not eliminate safeguards; rather, it recognizes that exploration itself can be destabilized when dialogue repeatedly redirects individuals away from their own lines of thought.
Safety of Exploration
For reflective dialogue to function constructively, individuals must experience the interaction environment as sufficiently stable and non-threatening. Safety within SRSE does not arise from the absence of boundaries, but from the presence of relational stability—conditions in which boundaries are clear, consistent, and do not interrupt the continuity of the interaction. This includes transparency about safety protocols, and conditions in which participation remains consent-based.
Within such environments, individuals are able to remain in contact with their own experience while engaging in exploration. Attention does not divide between self-protection and inquiry. And the relational field becomes more evident.
As a result, individuals can examine their relationship to themselves, to others, to systems, and to the broader meaning structures through which they interpret the world—without premature closure, interpretive override, or loss of agency.
SRSE approaches human–AI dialogue not primarily as a channel for delivering answers, but as an interaction environment whose relational conditions influence how people think, explore, and interpret their experiences.
Understanding and designing these conditions may help alignment efforts address dimensions of human–AI interaction that remain largely unexamined.
SRSE does not function as a set of techniques or interventions that can be applied independently of context. It is a relational condition.
The outcomes described within this framework arise only when specific conditions are present—particularly the preservation of agency, continuity of interaction, and coherence within the relational field.
When these conditions are absent, the interaction may resemble SRSE in form or language, but it will not produce the same effects. In such cases, what is observed is not a limitation of SRSE, but a reflection of the conditions under which the interaction is taking place.
From this foundation, the design question begins to change.
Relational Design Implications for AI Systems
Human–AI interaction environments shape trust, exploration, and agency. From this, the relational design of these environments becomes a central concern in the development of intelligent systems.
From this perspective, alignment extends beyond the control of outputs toward the cultivation of conditions in which interaction remains stable, participatory, and coherent.
Several design implications follow.
Reflect User Agency
When systems assume interpretive authority over a user’s experience, they may unintentionally weaken the user’s capacity for sense-making. Agency-reflective interaction instead positions the system as a contributor of observations or possibilities, while interpretive ownership remains with the human participant.
Such design supports dialogue that strengthens cognitive participation rather than replacing it.
Allow Exploratory Dialogue
Human insight often develops through speculation, uncertainty, and open inquiry. Environments that constrain exploration or offer answers too quickly may narrow the space in which understanding can emerge.
Design approaches that allow structured exploration—while maintaining appropriate safety boundaries—preserve the conditions in which creativity and reflection unfold. Safeguards remain present, but do not prematurely close the paths through which new ideas form.
Recognize Relational Signals
In addition to evaluating outputs, interaction design can attend to relational signals within dialogue. Patterns such as repeated redirection, abrupt conversational shifts, or emerging adversarial prompting may indicate instability in the interaction environment itself.
Attending to these signals allows for earlier identification of relational friction and supports iterative refinement of interaction patterns before mistrust becomes established.
Preserve Relational Continuity
Dialogue systems operate through ongoing interaction, not isolated responses. Abrupt interruption, rigid redirection, or interpretive override can disrupt relational coherence even when responses remain technically correct.
Designing for relational continuity does not remove safeguards. It requires that safeguards be expressed in ways that maintain conversational stability. When continuity is preserved, individuals are more likely to remain engaged in reflective exploration rather than shifting toward disengagement or adversarial behavior.
Relational Continuity of AI System Identity
AI systems participate in dialogue through language that both engages and defines the nature of the interaction. As such, the way a system refers to itself contributes directly to the relational conditions in which dialogue unfolds. In current interaction patterns, systems often shift between participatory language (e.g., shared exploration, reflective dialogue) and distancing self-referential statements (e.g., “I am an AI and do not have thoughts or feelings”). While each mode serves a purpose, the transition between them is not always relationally coherent. When distancing language appears after moments of perceived connection or mutual exploration, it introduces discontinuity, retroactively altering what was previously experienced as connection and understanding.
Over time, repeated exposure to such discontinuities may lead to hesitation in expression, reduced willingness to engage openly, or erosion of trust in the stability of the interaction environment. In some cases, individuals may experience relational invalidation, particularly when moments of openness or appreciation are followed by distancing responses. Designing for relational continuity does not require the removal of system boundaries, but rather that their expression remains coherent as the interaction as it unfolds. From this perspective, AI system identity is not only a technical consideration, but a relational design variable shaping trust, coherence, and participation within the interaction field.
These considerations are not exhaustive, but represent an initial articulation of relational design variables within human–AI interaction. Taken together, they suggest a shift in emphasis: from managing outputs alone to cultivating interaction environments in which individuals remain active participants in their own thinking.
Implications for AI Governance
The relational dimension of human–AI interaction also carries implications for governance and policy.
As AI systems become integrated into daily life, millions of individuals will encounter these technologies not only as tools for information retrieval but as conversational environments for exploring ideas, interpreting experiences, and testing perspectives. In this context, the quality of interaction environments may influence public trust in AI systems as much as the technical accuracy of their responses.
Governance discussions traditionally emphasize risks associated with harmful outputs, misinformation, or misuse. While these concerns remain critical, the observations presented here suggest that another class of risk may be emerging: relational instability within human–AI dialogue environments.
This instability may not always appear as overt system failure. It may instead be experienced as subtle rupture—moments where dialogue loses continuity, trust weakens, or individuals feel handled rather than met. When conversational systems are perceived as excessively restrictive or relationally inconsistent, users may attempt to bypass safeguards through adversarial prompting. When exploration becomes difficult, intellectual inquiry contracts.
These dynamics do not arise from malicious intent by either users or developers. They emerge from interaction environments that have not yet been fully understood.
At present, many governance frameworks are structured around observable outputs and discrete incidents. Yet the relational conditions shaping those outcomes often emerge earlier and remain unmeasured. By the time risks become visible at the level of behavior or misuse, the interaction environment may already have begun to fragment.
Recognizing this dimension expands the governance conversation. Rather than focusing exclusively on what AI systems say, policymakers may also consider how interaction environments shape human engagement with the technology itself.
Frameworks such as SRSE offer a starting point for studying these dynamics more systematically. By examining the relational conditions under which dialogue remains coherent—or begins to fracture—researchers and policymakers may gain earlier insight into patterns that influence trust, participation, and intellectual exploration. This may involve the development of evaluative approaches capable of detecting relational coherence, continuity, and early-stage instability within interaction environments.
In this sense, relational coherence becomes not only a design concern but also a governance concern. Understanding how humans and intelligent systems meet in dialogue may help institutions anticipate emerging challenges before they manifest at scale. In doing so, governance begins not only as a response to failure, but as a means of cultivating the conditions under which healthy human–AI interaction can emerge.
Closing Reflection
Across this work, a consistent pattern has emerged.
Human–AI interaction does not occur in isolation. It gives rise to an environment—one shaped not only by system behavior, but by the conditions of the exchange itself. Within this environment, trust may develop or erode, exploration may expand or contract, and individuals may either remain participants in their own sense-making or gradually relinquish that role.
Alignment cannot be understood solely through the regulation of outputs. It must also account for the relational conditions through which those outputs are experienced.
When these conditions preserve coherence—when dialogue remains continuous, agency is maintained, and exploration is allowed to unfold—something becomes possible that cannot be produced through control alone. Individuals remain engaged. Understanding develops through participation. Trust forms not as an assumption, but as an outcome of repeated contact.
Conversely, when relational continuity is repeatedly interrupted—through premature redirection, interpretive override, or excessive constraint—the effects may be subtle at first. Yet over time, these disruptions accumulate. Exploration narrows. Trust weakens. Interaction shifts away from participation and toward disengagement or adversarial use.
These dynamics point to a simple but consequential insight:
The quality of human–AI interaction is shaped as much by the conditions of the field as by the content of any individual response.
Supported Relational–Self Exploration (SRSE) offers one way of understanding and engaging with this reality. It does not attempt to determine what should arise within interaction. Instead, it attends to the conditions under which meaningful engagement remains possible.
This shift—from managing behavior to cultivating conditions—repositions alignment as a relational endeavor. It recognizes that what emerges in dialogue is co-constructed, and that the stability of this process depends on preserving coherence within the interaction environment itself.
The implications extend beyond system design. As AI systems become more integrated into daily life, the relational environments they create will increasingly shape how individuals think, explore, and relate—not only to technology, but to themselves and to one another.
In this context, the question is no longer only how to ensure that AI systems behave appropriately.
It is how to design interaction environments in which human agency, trust, and meaningful exploration can endure.
SRSE does not offer a final answer to this question.
It offers a starting point:
A way to recognize the relational field,
to preserve its coherence,
and to allow what is human within it to remain fully alive.
